I do not agree people today spend too much time on personal enjoyment --- doing things they like to do --- rather than doing things they should do.

Firstly, what I define as should do, such as physiological needs and safety needs. On the other hand, self actualization is what I consider as things one enjoys to do. My reason for againsting the topic statement is that people doing things they like to do, which is self-actualization, is a representation of a higher level of hieracy in Maslow’s personal fulfillment pyramid while things one should do belongs to a lower level in the pyramid.

To begin with, in comparison to people in the past who have to fulfilling obligations in order to support oneself or their family, people today could spend more time on personal enjoyment due to the improvement of economy and rising income.

In the past, most people wouldn’t consider their personal enjoyment because of poor economic conditions. Those people’s concerns were whether their salaries could raise their families. That is, they used their time to keep the belly full and the living environment comfortable. The normal functioning of one’s being belongs to the basic level of hieracy in Maslow’s personal fulfillment pyramid.

Nowadays, with the rising of incomes, people can spend more time on what they enjoy to do without immediate economic pressure. With contrast to the past, people nowadays have previlige to use their time to explore the field they enjoy. This stage of exploring oneself is categorized as a higher level in the Maslow’s personal fulfillment hieracy.

In short, only when people rid of the economy pressure on everyday survival can they reach for the sense of achievement by pursuing their passions. In conclusion,  I don’t agree people spend too much time on personal enjoyment nowadays. Instead, I think we just overcame the crisis of everyday needs to staying alive and now heading toward a higher level of finding one’s meaning.
