I know many of you may be shilly-shallying about whether you should major in 外文系 or choose a department where you can learn vocational skills in the 4 years in college. The degree of Bachelor of Arts has been calling as a worthless degree since, quoted from PTT, undergraduates of which aren't equipped with 'practical' skills.
This article isn't about whether you should choose 外文系 or not, you have to make your own decision. In this article, I'll just simply discuss what class I took in 外文系 and what did I learn in my freshman year.
-
Approaches to Literature. (The class was taught in Chinese)In this course, you'll have to read some novels and plays the professor selected. The professor would go over the text in class, making some annotations and help you to read between the lines. I think it's quite like when you're reading a movie critic. E.g. the beginning scene of The Godfather I, you can hear the voice of Vito Corleone without seeing the person, why the director introduce the character in this way? The professors are like critics who will help you find a plausible answer for that.
-
Western Literature.(The class was taught in English)In this course, you will read the masterpieces in Western literature that were written before Renaissance. During last semester, we read Bible, Gilgamesh, Psalm, Oedipus, Metamorphosis. You have to do the reading yourself before the class. During the class, the professor will introduce the context, the idea of the text, and figure of speech.

English Oral Training. (The class was taught in English) For my 3-hour Oral Training class, the professor divided the course into 3 parts. In the first hour, the professor would chat with the students one by one, asking about what happened last week. In the second hour it would be for a duet doing a presentation for one chapter in the novel we read. As for the last hour of the class, we would watch some videos.

English Composition. (The class was taught in English) You'll learn the structure of an essay and skills that help you write a good essay (comparison, definition, classification, etc.). In my class, we will write an essay per week by using one method.
Here's what I think one might learn in 外文系,
1.Articulate your thoughts, make a point, and cut the redundant words.
2.Know what are the writers trying to express.
Debunk your false expectations of 外文系
1.Your speaking will improve. You don't get many chances to talk in English outside Oral Training class because my observation is that students in Taiwan rarely ask questions in class. And you're likely to be one of us, unless you make up your mind to brave yourself to ask questions in all classes. Simply put, if you don't use English everyday your speaking level will be the same.
2.Your degree and what you've learnt in DFLL ensure you a job, or, a job you want. Unless your career will be in the academic field of literature, you should pick up "another skill", such as programming, editing videos, Office software (WORD,EXCEL,PPT,etc), learn a language and make it as fluent as your English skill is, etc. Go to a job hunting website to see which kind ofcareer you want to pursue and what the requisitions are.
Please feel free to ask me questions, I'm glad to help you out;)
